ThijsNL: "Kolento is the favorite to win Blizzcon"
Hello Thijs. Let’s start with a short introduction, for the people who might not know you.
Hello. I’m Thijs “ThijsNL” Molendijk and I play for Meet Your Makers. I’m 20 years young, I study at a university and I play Hearthstone since the beta. Previously, I’ve played 2 or 3 years League of Legends (Not very competitive, but I reached diamond every year) and I played poker.
Do you think poker has helped you getting pro at Hearthstone?
I don’t think poker has a big influence, but at LAN’s it does help me. I’m the type of player who tries to read his opponent. Especially if you consider Hearthstone is really young, I think you can read the faces of many of my opponents. There is a noticeable difference when they make a play they’re happy with, or not, and that might give information about the cards they’re holding in their hands.
How did your hearthstone career start?
It is very special how my hearthstone career started. I was a totally unknown player, and I played the weekly ZOTAC cups. After a while, I’ve won the ZOTAC cup 5 times (I still have the most wins). Because I won so many, I got invited to play in King of the Hill, where I won against the best players in the world 9 times in a row. From there on things gone really fast. People got to know me, and I attend most big tournaments in Europe and online.
Blizzcon qualifiers. Many people wanted you to advance to Blizzcon, but you lost in the last round vs. Kolento. What happened?
First, it was rather painful I had to face Kolento. I think he was the best player I could’ve encountered. The first two games went as I expected, I won the first and he got to counter me, resulting in a 1-1. Then I picked Shaman into his Handlock, but he played that game brilliant. I had 2 or 3 turns where I was either 1 mana of 1-2 damage off lethal, and in the end I lost that game. I’m still fed up from being this close to making it. In the end, I got 5th place after winning against the other players off-stream, which makes it even more painful for me.
Kolento is a likely candidate to win Blizzcon. Which other players will give him a run for his money?
All four players from NA are very strong, and they will make it hard for him. Another player who impressed me is Greensheep. The Chinese/Korean scene is quite hard to follow, but Nicolas, Tiddler and RenieHour are well-known good players. If you are able to qualify means you are a good player, but for me, Kolento is the favorite to win Blizzcon.
In which tournaments can we expect you?
My schedule is really stacked. I just came back from the Seatstory Cup in Germany, which Savjz won. I get invited to most online invitationals, like the Heroes of the Cards (With names like Savjz, Kolento, RDU and Massan). Next weekend I’m playing in Romania for Dreamhack Bucharest. The last week of november I'm attending Dreamhack Winter in Sweden. In december there will be an awesome LAN-event aswell, but you'll have to wait for more details :)
What is the difference between tournaments and the ladder?
The difference is really big. On the ladder you are focused on the meta of that moment, and you play the deck that is strongest that moment. In tournaments, especially when you can ban 1 of your opponents decks, there is a lot more strategy. I’m more focused on counterdecks/countercards.
What is your opinion on the meta right now?
In Europe, the ladder is focused a lot on hunters. People play hunters, or decks that are strong against hunter, like Priest and Warrior. It’s always fun to see, because in 2 days decks like Handlock and Rogue will be popular, because they match up well against Priest and Warrior. Hunter beats these decks, and this circle continues.
Do you think there are currently broken cards in the game?
I consider the game very balanced at the moment. Loatheb is a card I consider very strong and might deserve a small nerf. Undertaker is also very strong, but most classes have an answer for it on turn 1-2. It can snowball very hard though, if you don’t have an answer. I won’t call these cards broken, they’re just stronger than others.
What is your favorite “cheese” deck?
Because I’m a druid fan, I’m going with Murloc Druid. It’s not even bad and I snowballs extremely hard after a good start, which I enjoy a lot. You should give it a try, I even get some wins with it on Legend Rank :P
