Overwatch's in-game credit can only be earned through opening loot boxes but this will change in the Chinese version. The upcoming 1.12 patch for the Chinese version will change the business model a little bit by allowing players to directly purchase credits with real money. In fact that's a smart "trick" to circumvent the Chinese law against game gambling such as RNG in loot boxes. Read to learn the details.

Originally players pay $35 for 50 loot boxes and it's seen as gambling. The trick is players now pay $35 for 120 credits and get 50 loot boxes as bonus — this is not gambling now. However if you play Overwatch you know 120 credits is a very small amount of currency. In essence, the 50 bucks players spend are on the loot boxes.

Overwatch CN new business model:
$1.8 for 5 credits, bonus: 2 loot boxes
$4.4 for 15 credits, bouns: 5 loot boxes
$8.8 for 30 credits, bouns: 11 loot boxes
$17.7 for 60 credits, bouns: 24 loot boxes
$35 for 120 credits, bouns: 50 loot boxes

Starting May 1, 2017 all games operated in China have to reveal to the public the odds of item drops in all kinds of RNG boxes and packs. Blizzard's Hearthstone and Overwatch revealed theirs
