ArcheAge's Combat is Tab-Targeting but Still Pretty Fun
ArcheAge, a CryEngine 3 MMORPG created by XL Games, will be published in North America and Europe by Trion Worlds. The game won't be available in English market very soon, so I took some time to take a look at the Chinese version, which is in closed beta. The game titles itself the third generation MMO and I guess most of you will be interested in the combat system. Generally, the combat takes the traditional tab-targeting approach, with some tweaks.
I'm not going to compare ArcheAge's combat with Tera or Vindictus because they are different things. ArcheAge is not an action game, as a matter of fact, it's all about customizable combos and strategies. Your abilities (active skills and passive powers) are determined by the talents you choose. There are a dozen of talents and you can pick up three at level 10. Each ability, regardless of which talent tree it belongs, can form a combo with numbers of other abilities, and you can choose accordingly what abilities you want to learn in order to make up an ideal combo. It's safe to say that there are hundreds of possible combinations.
Another thing I'm happy to see is you can actually equip multiple types of weapons and use them in battle. For instance, I play a sorcerer class but I equip a one-handed sword with shield and a bow at the same time. Most of my abilities are spells but some of them are closed combat skills and bow related skills. Watch the short combat video below and you will see my weapon changes with the ability I use.
