Overwatch Interview: No Weapon Swap; Cosmetic Changes Maybe Available

At gamescom 2015, Blizzard reveals a new hero Lucio and two new battlegrounds Volskaya Industries and Numbani for its team based FPS Overwatch. We had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Chu, the senior game producer of Overwatch, and talk about the new contents and other gameplay details.
 
How to play at two maps: Volskaya Industries and Numbani



According to Michael Chu, Volskaya Industries is a Point Capture map located near St. Petersburg, Russia - manufacturing center responsible for producing massive, human-piloted mechs which help protect the local population. The mechanism in this map is Point Capture - the offensive team goal is to capture critical objectives, while the defenders must maintain control over them until time runs out.
 
Unlike Volskaya Industries, Numbani is the most developed city in the future world, in which human and robot coexist peacefully. In this map, One team must escort Doomfist’s gauntlet as it travels to the Numbani Heritage Museum , while the defenders must fight to stop this weapon from reaching its the aforementioned destination.
 
Now there are three map objectives in Overwatch: Payload, Point capture and both. The Overwatch Dev team is looking for more interesting map objective, but in current phase only these three objectives are available.
 
Similar to Sona in League of Legends, new hero Lucio uses his music to fight


 
Lucio is a support hero in Overwatch, and he can use cutting-edge Sonic Amplifier buffets enemies with projectiles and knocks foes back with blasts of sound. He also plays two different songs—one to heal his team and the other to boost their movement speed—and uses his Crossfade technique to switch between them at will.
 
In Overwatch, every hero's abilities are designed to be effective as part of a team. It's obvious to find out that Offense, Defense and Support roles in Overwatch, but as for Tank role, it seems that they don't have distinctive features.
 


Michael took Reinhardt as an example to introduce Tank's role in a team. When you are too close to Reinhardt, he can deal great amounts of damage. Moreover, Reinhardt can project a broad, forward-facing energy shield to protect himself and his companions behind the shield, therefore you have to consider how to deal with it.
 
As a team-based game, the line-ups is very important, and this is also the difference from other FPS games. When it comes to the update frequency for heroes and maps, Michael Chu said it's too early to think about this question, and they are focus on polishing the game.

When it comes to FPS games, weapon switching and cosmetic changes are two major stuff which make people curious to know. The answer is no weapon switching since in Overwatch each hero has an unique weapon. As for cosmetic changes, Blizzard hasn't completely denied. Now Overwatch is on Battle.net launcher, and Closed Beta will start at this fall, so it won't be too long before we can play Blizzard new FPS game.
