Welcome back to Maljas’s H1Z1 Beginner’s Survival Guide. This particular portion of the guide will cover all you will ever need to know to begin crafting in the world of H1Z1. As you are reading, please remember that this game is in its alpha stage and that means it is still very much subject to change.  Without any further delay, let get crafting survivors.

Crafting: Build by Discovery

H1Z1

Crafting in H1Z1 is mix bag of tricks that is easy to learn how to start, but difficult to truly master due almost entirely to the Discovery System. Now, the Discovery system may seem somewhat familiar to those who have ever picked up crafting in Guild Wars 2. To start crafting, you must open your Inventory by press “I” (default) and click on the “Discovery” button at the top. In order to craft an item, you must first discover it.

H1Z1

You’ll notice that there are four spaces, at the discover window, where you are allowed to place any suitable crafting materials. By placing randomly placing materials into the spaces, you will “accidently” discover items that can be created with said materials. For example, in order to create your first ranged weapon, a Makeshift Bow, you need Wood  Sticks and Scraps of Cloth. Once you obtain Wood Sticks and Scraps of Cloth, you can place both materials into two spaces at the Discovery window and press “Discover” near the bottom. You will be prompted that you have learned how to create a Makeshift Bow with those materials. This is the heart of crafting in H1Z1, and a large portion of it is about finding and experimenting with the many different materials in the game. There are tons of combinations that make something you may not expect, but that’s the fun of it.

Crafting: Craft by Recipes

When you discover an item, depending on the server rule set, your character will permanently remember it in the form of Recipes. Recipes are stored in the “Crafting” section on the Inventory window. Any discoveries you make will always be recorded there so that you will not need to remember what you need to make them again. Items names laced with a green outline, in the Recipes section, mean that they are new additions that you have recently discovered.  As stated earlier, some server rule sets do not allow you to retain recipes if you die, in any way. In this case, you would need to remember what you used to make different items, or simply record the combinations outside of the game.

The Epilogue: Crafting

As you can see, crafting in H1Z1 is not some extremely complicated system that will take time to learn. It is very simple, but at the same time very addicting to play with due to the ease of access as well as the potential in discovery. Picking up a new item and trying to combine it with your other items will be a continuously interesting process that SOE can easily expand over time. There are tons of combinations to be found out, and while I could spill the beans on a few interesting ones, I think I’ll let you fellow survivalist figure them out on your own. After all, where would the fun be in that? Better get discovering!
